What is the difference between a seismograph and Richter Scale while both are used for measuring the intensity of an earthquake?

The seismograph is an instrument used to record earthquakes and consists of a sensor, mounted on hard rocks and a recording device connected to it. The records of earthquakes, obtained from the seismograph, are called seismograms. The Richter Scale is used to measure the magnitude (and not intensity) of an earthquake from the seismograms. The greater the amplitude of the seismogram, the higher will be the magitude of the earthquake. The magnitude refers to the energy released during an earthquake and the Richter Scale starts from minuszero (-0) and goes beyond eight (8+).

V.Subramanyan, Dombivli

The Richter Scale measures only the magnitude of an earthquake. The seismograph, on the other hand, records other important details like time and duration of the tremor and direction and distance from the centre of the earth quake.

K.K.Biswas, Gwalior

Those who are affected by it know no difference.

Ajay Chutani, Karnal

What is meant by royalty in business terms?

Royalty means a sum payable (based on output or sale) to the owner of a mine, a patentee or an author, for the use of rights vested in him. For example, a firm of publishers of a book has to give the author a certain percentage of the sale-proceeds as royalty.

Thongsei, New Delhi

An individual or company or any other institution pays a certain amount as per agreement for acquiring a special right for using others' property. This amount is paid as a consideration for the use of the special rights and is called royalty. It is also payable for the use of any patent or copyright, apart from extraction of minerals from mines. The royalty is generally based on the extent of such exploitation -- the quantitative use, or the income yielded from such use.

Preeti Teje, Bhopal

A royal commission.

What is Parkinson's disease?

It is a disorder of the central nervous system characterised by tremors, muscular rigidity and the lack of movement and facial expression. It was named after the British physician James Parkinson (1755-1824). The disease is caused from a lack of dopamine, a neurotransmitter which are essential for the control of voluntary movement of muscles. The disease is more prevalent among men than women and affects a person generally after the age of 50. The symptoms of the diease develop gradually, often with trembling of hands. For this reason, Parkinson's disease also is called `shaking palsy'. The disorder can cripple the body but rarely causes death.

The cause of the disease is unknown, although it is believed that environmental pollution from pesticides may play an important role.

S.P.S.Jain, Calcutta

Coup in the brain.

P.A.Ghadge, Satara

A disease that makes even the deadliest of boxers shiver!

Why are there no advertisements on the editorial page of a newspaper?

To preserve the sanctity.

Raj Kumar Hansdah, Bhilai

Editorials are unsponsored.

M.Venugopal, Madras

Just as there is none on a cricket pitch but on the sides of the ground.

Mudit Mathur, Hyderabad

Otherwise we will start getting newspapers free of cost at our doorsteps!

Mahananda, JNU

To prove that a newspaper is not only meant for advertisers but also for the editor.

Mahanand, JNU

Oh no, don't give them idea please!

Abhineet, Lucknow

Because of the apprehension that an editorial page with ads might turn an aditorial one.

K.K.Biswas, Gwalior

To return at least some value to the readers, for the price paid by them!

Sameer Bhargava, Calcutta

Because the editorial page itself is an advertisement for that newspaper.

Mahamuni Shailesh, Osmanabad

What is the difference between a bad debt and Non Performing Assets (NPA)?

A bad debt on loan is termed as a bad debt, when the recovery of the loan becomes impossible. NPA for the banks, the loans and advances given to the customers form the biggest part of their oncome generating assets. The income on these loans are generated in the form of interest or discount. When the repayment of the interest or instalments on these loans remain unpaid for more than 6 months (2 quarters), after they are due for payment, these loans or advances are classified as Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) to distinguish these loans from the Standard Assets (Performing Assets).

Depending on the age of these loans, after being identified as NPAs, and the availability of the realisable value of securities, they are further classified as sub-standard, doubtful or loss assets. While all the bad debts are non-performing assets (NPAs), all the NPAs are not necessarily the bad debts.

K.Amar, Bhopal

A bad debt is a Canara Bank loan to ABCL while a non-performing asset is Amitabh Bachchan himself!

Aneesh Joshi, Belgaum

The first is dead while the other is in coma.

N.M.Paithankar, Paithan

What is the meaning of the phrase to let your hair down and where did it originate?

The phrase means relaxed behaviour and an absence of inhibitions. During the age of hairdressing in France, new styles developed every day. Women of aristocracy used to appear in public with the latest hair-style, which made it difficult for them to rest their heads on pillows. So when they were not in public, these women would pull out the pins studded in hair and let their hair free. Soon informality was linked with hair that was free and unbound.

Surinder Kumar Marwaha, New Delhi

It means `To relax after a tiring time' -- it probably originated in the fairy tale of Rapunzel, who let her hair down each day to let her prince climb up to her room, using her hair as a rope.

Amit Loiwal, Baroda

Why are fingerprints of identical twins not alike, whereas that of two clones are suppossed to identical?

Twins are monozygotic or dizygotic. Monozygotic twins are externally identical while dizygotic twins may or may not be identical. Every human has two things which are unique to him -- finger prints and DNA. In any case twins cannot have identical DNA or finger prints because they are genetically different. But clones are genetically identical and hence finger prints of clones are supposed to be identical.

Prasanna Ghadge, Satara

To give sleepless nights to the finger-prints experts of the crime branch!

Mahananda, JNU

Because the clone is the same person.

Tahir Qureshi, Delhi

Because the former is one of nature's beautiful gifts whereas the latter is a product of man's mischief.

Aneesh Joshi, Belgaum
