How does rigorous imprisonment differ from
simple imprisonment?
Imprisonment is one of the punishments to which offenders are liable under the provisions
of the Indian Penal Code. In case of rigorous imprisonment the offender is put to hard
labour such as grinding corn, digging earth, drawing water, cutting fire-wood, etc. in
jail. In case of simple imprisonment the offender is confined to jail and is not put to
any kind of work.
The maximum imprisonment that can be awarded for an offence is fourteen years (5.57 of
IPC). The minimum term actually named for a given offence is 24 hours (5.510).

What is a Formula One car?
Formula One is the highest form of motor racing and the cars used in these races are
called Formula One cars.
These cars are powered with an engine which is around 3000 c.c. and can reach speeds of
350 kmph. These cars are constructed under the technical specifications given by the
Federation Internationale D`1' Automobile (FIA), which is the governing body for
automobile makers. The aerodynamics of these cars are engineered to perfection as it plays
a very important role in picking up speed and the ensuring stability of the car.

Why is Greenland called so, while nothing is green there?
Greenland, or Kalaallit Nunaat as it is now called, was
discovered by Norseman Eric the Red, late in the 10th
century A.D. At that time it had considerable amounts of greenery, especially when
compared to Eric's homeland Norway. So he called it Greenland and founded settlements on
the island. But soon, Greenland's climate started changing for the worse and eventually
became so bad, that the Norsemen abandoned the place by 1400 AD. It was only resettled in
the early 18th century by Eskimos from
Canada, when pressure of population forced them to
migrate. Today Greenland (the world's biggest island)
belongs to Denmark.

What is the difference between a diamond and a
crystal?
The solid state of matter in which the atoms or molecules are arranged in a definite
repetitive geometric patterns is known as crystal. Liquid metals, alloys, minerals and
some organic materials solidify into crystalline form. A slower rate of cooling results in
a larger crystal. Crystals have flat boundary planes or faces. A diamond is an allotrope
(another form) of pure carbon having a geometry of dense, strongly bonded, close-knit,
tetrahedral crystals. Its high
refractive index gives it extraordinary lustre. Its
physical/optical property may vary from colourless,
transparent to opaque and black. The colour may be
changed by bombarding it with atomic particles of various kinds. Being the hardest
material it also finds industrial uses, apart from its value as a gem.
Asok Das, Mumbai
A diamond is an allotrope of carbon and naturally occurring diamonds are cut into a
desired shape to accentuate their brilliance, whereas a crystal is created by cutting much
cheaper lead-glass.

What is meant by badla-rates and forward trading in stock markets?
Mostly in stock trading, there is no exchange of money. What is paid is the net loss or net
profit. However, interest charges are payable on the amount which remains due during the
settlement periods or till such time as the accounts are settled. This amount is known as
badla and the rate is known as the badla rate. These rates keep changing as per market
conditions and availability of money. Forward trading is also a practice used in stock
trading. When the stocks are traded but there is no payment of money or handing over of
shares, the practise is
called forward trading.

How is the age of rocks determined?
In the olden days scientists could estimate the age of rocks either older or younger by
comparing their layers with one another by the traces (fossils) they posses. But they were
unable to determine the exact ages of rocks.
It was possible only after the discovery of radio-activity.Certain rocks give off high
energy radiation due to the presence of radioactive substances in them. Radioactive
substances have got the property of decay (break down of active material with the passage
of time). For example, uranium decays giving rise to lead. By measuring the amount of
lead-present in the uranium sample scientists can
determine the ages of rocks by taking the half-life period of that radio active element.
This is called the uranium-lead method which is used for very old rocks.
Another radioactive element carbon-14 which is present in almost all living things is also
used. When organisms die, the C-14 in the tissue decays. The half-life period of C-14 is
5,700-years i.e., half of C-14 decays in so many years! With the help of this geologists
can determine the ages of logs and rocks. This is known as carbon-dating method.

Political negotiations held under duress or under the
threat of military force is known as ``gunboat

Why is silicon used for breast augmentation? How is it implanted?
Silicon is a material which does not cause reaction to the body, hence it is used for
implantation in body tissues. Such a process is normally done in women whose breasts are
removed due to cancer or who wish to give shape to their sagging figure.
