How are military vehicles numbered?.
The numbering of military vehicles consists of two
figures, followed by a letter, followed by four (or five) figures. e.g. 96C 4723. The
first two numbers indicate the year of the vehicle's entry into service; in this case
1996. The letter denotes the type of vehicle; `A' denotes motorcycles, `B' denotes
cars/jeeps/jongas, `C' denotes one-tonne tracks, `D' denotes 3-tonne vehicles etc; the
last four (or five) figures are that particular vehicle's serial number.

Why does hard work make one sweat?
The sweat glands are controlled by the hypothalamus in
the brain and form a part of the autonomic nervous system. During hard work, body
temperature increases. This triggers the hypothalamus, which is a part of the body's heat
regulating mechanism. So, in turn, sweat glands absorb fluid from blood capillaries and
surrounding cells and causes perspiration so as to cool the body by evaporation of sweat.
Sweat contains sodium chloride, potassium salts, urea and lactic acid as its main
constituents.
Dheeraj Babbar, Jaipur
While doing hard work our body temperature rises. To
overcome this the body sweats more. Evaporation of sweat-helps the body to cool down and
thus the temperature of the body is maintained.

What makes `instant coffee' instant? Is there any
other kind of coffee too?
Instant coffee is fully processed and is in
ready-to-use form. The other type of coffee is filter coffee powder which is prepared by
roasting and grinding coffee beans (seeds). While instant coffee can be produced in a
jiffy, filter coffee takes time. It is made with the extract obtained from filtering
coffee powder.

Why do flowers smell so nice? What is the source of
that smell?
The smell in flowers comes from the special oils that
are produced in the petals, as the plant grows. When this oil evaporates, which it does
very easily, it gives off a fragrance which we can smell. Various combinations of
chemicals in the oil of different flowers result in a variety of smells -- some pleasant
like those in roses and lilies while others are quite unpleasant.
Preeti Dinekar, Kolhapur
Flowers usually smell nice or pleasant for attracting
insects for entemophily (a kind of cross-pollination), and nectar is the source of this.

Why do appliances like geysers, heaters and toasters
consume different quantities of electricity?
The rating of any electrical appliance depends on the
type of element used. More the resistance of the element, the less electricity will it
consume, but then it will produce less heat in that time. A high power appliance will have
a high-wattage element and to achieve this it should have less resistance value allowing
more current to flow.
S.P.S.Jain, Calcutta
Because of their different wattage ratings.
Raj Kumar Hansdah, Bhilai

Why do eggs harden on boiling while other things
liquefy on heating?
Eggs contain rich proteins composed of many amino
acids. On heating protein coagulates into a solid mass. While other fats like ghee
contains more than one fatty acids, which may be saturated or unsaturated. These fatty
acids soften at low temperatures and subsequently melt. In the case of the former the
reaction is irreversible, but it is reversible in the latter instance.
Mohd. Shafi, AMU
Because people always hard boil it.
Dheeraj Babbar, Jaipur
Because we buy them before the hen could hatch them.

What is the origin of the phrase `Wild goose chase'?
Wild goose chase refers to a futile or foolish quest.
Its origin is either that a wild goose is difficult to catch or that once caught it turns
out to be of little value, being too tough to eat. Either way, the pursuit of it seems to
be something of a waste of time.
Another explanation relates to an early form of steeple
chasing. In a kind of follow-my-leader game, one horseman would gallop off across the
fields, choosing the most difficult course he could in the hope that the riders following
him would be thrown off at some fence, hedge or ditch. This game was known as wild goose
chase, since the group of riders would be spread out in a way reminiscent of a skein of
wild geese in flight. To sober on lookers, the whole game must have seemed pointless as
well as dangerous.
To go on a wild goose chase, then, came to mean to go on a
silly or futile pursuit of some worthless or even imaginary goal.
Sudhir Joshi, Meerut
